When over-the-counter skincare was introduced to the public 50 years ago, it was said that your hand was natures best cleansing tool. We now know that your skin needs extra help renewing the itself with exfoliation.

Exfoliation is the process of removing the top layer of dead skin to expose healthier skin cells. Exfoliation offers the benefit of better blood circulation, which will bring color back to your skin giving it a more radiant appearance. It will also improve elasticity.

On the other hand too much exfoliation will lead to pigmentation issues in darker skin tones, and skin sensitivity. Pigmentation issues occur whenever the skin is irritated or damaged. Skin renews itself every 20 to 40 days, which is why it is recommended to exfoliate once a week, unless you have oily skin.

Types of Exfoliation

There are many household product that you can use to custom make a scrub for your exfoliation:

  • Salt – for oily skin
  • Sugar – for all skin types
  • Coffee grinds – helps production of collagen
  • Baking Soda – mild scrub
  • Oatmeal – gentle scrub

Over the Counter Scrubs

There is an endless supply of scrubs that you can buy over the counter for the face and the body.

Toners and clarifying lotions work as an exfoliate to renew skin as well.

Exfoliation Brush

Sonic brushes are a great non-abrasive way to exfoliate the skin when done correctly. Sonic brushes have round bristle tips for a comfortable clean. Using a thicker soap, and damping the bristles before you use a sonic brush will also help with comfort.

Chemical Peel

A chemical peel is typically done by a professional. You can find some over the counter peels in shops like Sephora. A chemical encourages the dead skin cells to peel to expose healthier skin underneath.

There is no one size fits all, but I enough you to commit to at least one of these methods, so that you have the best skin possible.
